The Dangers of Generators

It’s important to know that generator misuse, like misuse of any piece of large machinery, can prove fatal. Usually carbon monoxide poisoning is the cause of these mistakes, however injuries, and burns are common as well during power outages or storms. With the proper safety guards in check, you won’t have to worry about such issues.

However, it’s important to note that generators, both standby and portable produce quite a bit of carbon monoxide. Unfortunately, you won’t know it’s doing that until too late if that’s how your generator is acting up. As carbon monoxide is totally odorless, colorless and tasteless gas, so you won’t be able to sense it as your body is slowly starved of oxygen.

Indeed, carbon monoxide can kill you in as little as 5 minutes, bearing that the levels are high enough. Because of how quick and efficient carbon monoxide poisoning can be, death counts for the poisoning are often very high, which is why so many officials urge careful operation when using generators.

Don’t Put it Inside

The very first word in generator safety is not putting your generator inside your house or your commercial property. Indeed, putting a generator in an enclosed space of any kind, including indoor areas is why generators are so commonly associated with carbon monoxide deaths. Most generator-related injuries and deaths involve carbon monoxide poisoning, and it’s mostly from leaving them in enclosed spaces, like your basement garage, or even a space between your house and another house that’s far too narrow. If you don’t have a 20-foot buffer between your house and your generator, you’re doing it wrong.

Additionally, be sure to be careful about what direction you’re pointing that exhaust pipe. You can’t have it pointed at windows or doors or else that same, ultra dangerous gas might seep in through the windows and doors to harm you and your family. And, while you’re cleaning up from the storm or simply doing work around the house during the blackout, use a battery-operated carbon monoxide detector. Keep it at your side to keep you as safe and sound as possible. It’s the perfect way to add a marked layer of defense between you and any mishaps that might happen with your generator.
